Aug 7th. After an OK nights sleep (I did wake up at 5ish and couldn't get back to sleep) we get up, I have a Milo chocolate bar for energy and get in the water at 7:18 for our first dive of the day. Will be a good way of working up an appetite.
Dive 1 - The Whale. Black Tip Reef shark is seen, A nice blue spotted lagoon ray (RIP Steve Irwin) and a massive Giant Clam. The coral is spectacular at this time of day as well.
Dive 2 - Tennis Courts - Flynn Reef. Titan triggerfish, Lots of Giant Clams, Clownfish, Trumpetfish and a large Rocktail Cod being cleaned - the little fish even swim in his mouth which seeing the size of his teeth is pretty brave.
Dive 3 - Gordons Mooring. Several Green turtles, Black and White tip reef sharks basking on the sand, loads of cool swim throughs beneath the coral bhomies and after coming through one of these we look up and silhouetted against the surface is a large shoal of Spiny tailed pullers (very odd shaped fish). Another fun moment is when one of the new divers on their first buddy dive appears to be losing the tank off their back. I hang around in case help is needed but they sort it themselves. Really good fun this dive.
Dive 4 - Gordons Mooring (Night Dive). At this dive site is a very famous turtle. His name is Brian and he is about 170 years old. He is a giant amongst turtles. He sleeps in the same cavern of coral every night so we set out and I navigate us towards Brians house. Being careful with our torches we see him snoozing away - He really is a beast and would eat the Teenage mutant ninja turtles for breakfast. We also see some Grey Reef sharks and Grey whalers as well. 2 large painted lobsters are found in the rocks. Great fun.
We play some silly games back on the boat and then it is off to bed as we are up early for a morning dive tomorrow.
I hope to have photos of Brian the Turtle - watch this space.
