The 'Hunt' for Penguins 2 - The Otago Peninsula

We arrive in Dunedin and check in to our hostel. We then decide to head out to the Otago Peninsula to try and catch the penguins as they head for home after a days fishing. We drive round the twisty road with no barriers between you and the bay and book ourselves in to a tour that takes you on private land to the largest Yellow eyed penguin colony in the world. These are the rarest penguin and the most timid and reclusive. We have a look at the peninsula and see some fur seals, albatrosses and go on the tour where we are guided to various hides that resemble trenches from WWII so we can sneak up on the yellow eyed penguins and not bother them too much. We wait patiently on the cliffs and spot 2 penguins coming ashore, We hope to get close to them but this doesn't materialise. It gets dark and we abandon the search. At least we got to see 2 of these rare creatures and it is another species of penguin ticked off my list. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellow-eyed_Penguin
