Tasman Glacier

After lunch, we manage to get on a tour of the Tasman Glacial Lake - We drive off to the lake and jump onboard a dinghy power boat and we whizz off through lots of icebergs. It is a fascinating place and the lake itself is really cold (2 degrees C) - The icebergs are of various sizes - Some are enormous - 9 days previously there was a big carving from the main glacier. The icebergs vary in colour but all are full of rocks that get picked up as the ice travels down the glacier. If you dropped in a camera at the top of the glacier then it would be 500 years before it worked its way down to the bottom. We drive alongside a glacier and taste the water crystals - really nice ice. We also climb on 1 of the icebergs and have a look around. Finally we head to the bottom of the Tasman glacier itself - It is 600 metres thick but really dirty in colour. The sun sinks below the mountains so we head off back to some warmth.
