We carry on our trek through the Hooker valley crossing over a couple of swing bridges and the clouds clear and we get our first glimpse of Mount Cook. This is the highest mountain in NZ (3755m) and pretty impressive too. The mountain used to be 11 metres higher than it currently is but in 1991 the top piece of the mountain fell off in the middle of the night. It was quite a firework display as rocks crashed into each other and the noise was deafening. 2 climbers had a lucky escape - They were in a camp 200 metres from where a piece came off - They were due to climb to the summit (you have to get up at 1:00 am) - They slept through there alarm so the were in the hut instead of on the mountain.
