Churching Up

Jun 24th. The local village where 90% of the staff at Octopus come from and is just over the hill from the resort. They are proud of their local church choir which recently won a Yasewa Island group choir competition (this resulted in lots of Kava being drunk). We head over and see what the local village looks like - all the villagers are in their Sunday best. The service itself is in Fijian but the choir is amazingly good - even when the whole congregation are singing it is really impressive. The highlight for me though is the legendary 'Man with the Stick' - this is basically an old man who stalks all the children carrying a big stick - if they misbehave then they get whacked. Just getting an evil glare from this man is usually enough to shut any of the kids up but a few transgressed and got a pretty hefty tap on the head for their troubles. Absolute legend.
