At various points there are emergency phones on the bridge and signs to try and stop people jumping. There are quite a few around the half way point of the bridge just in case someone changes their mind.

The unofficial total for suicides is over 1,300 - they stopped counting when it got to 1000. A person jumps off every 15 days.
A woman from Piedmont, CA has the dubious distinction of having jumped off the bridge twice. She survived the first suicide attempt in 1988 but didn't on her second attempt later that year.
