Columbia Icefield

Continuing up the Icefields Parkway there is a very touristy but reasonably interesting activity at the Columbia Icefields centre. This takes you out in a special van out onto the Athabasca glacier to offer people a chance to walk on a glacier (I of course have already done this in New Zealand but didn't want to brag!). On the glacier, you get great views of the surrounding mountains (shame about the mist) but it is OK but extremely busy. I was a little concerned when 2 huge Americans stepped onto the glacier in case it cracked but we survived OK - probably a good thing that there was 300metres of ice under our feet. It was typical that the sun came out as I was leaving. The Columbia Icefield is absolutely massive as well - these glaciers are only the tips of the field, you just can't see it from where I was.
