Taupo sits in a volcanic region so the landscape is quite dynamic. We venture next to the Craters of the Moon, this basically is an area that you can walk around and see steam vents, Fumeroles and bubbling mud pools. There is a slight whiff of sulphur in the air and you can get pretty close to some of the vents, some of them can erupt at any time - a large one did so in 2001 and covered the boardwalks in 5cm of pumice and ash. Steam clouds are everywhere as there are lots of little vents and some huge craters as well. We wander around the loop circuit and climb up a hill to look down on the entire site.
