May 18th. We leave downtown Wellington at 8:15am after an interesting night out. The Maori Restaurant was cool - It is called 'Kai' - give it a try if you are in the neighbourhood. The owner was there and was playing his guitar and singing some Maori songs (and also a cover of Mariah Carey's 'I can't live...'! ). We drive North and east out of wellington and head towards the Wararapa region - This is on the east coast of the area. We pass the lake and head down to Cape Palliser. We can see the South Island from here and some mountain peaks with snow caps - it was a bit cloudy so the pictures aren't any good. There is a lighthouse down here and 258 steps to climb up to get there. The views are quite good from up there and you overlook the seal colony that lives here. The landscape is different from the South Island - not quite as spectacular.
