May 8th. Leaving Greymouth, we head north up to Punakaiki rocks - also known as the pancake rocks for how the rocks resemble layers of pancakes on top of each other. It is a beautiful day with the sun and clear blue skies. The rocks themselves are cool and there are various blowholes where the surf rushes in and the water shoots up through holes in the rocks. These are meant to be even more spectacular at high tide and with a strong wind but we are short of high tide by 4 hours. Still pretty cool as you can hear the waves rush in and then crash through the hole.
Pictures (Left) - View of the rock formations, (Right) - Supposedly there are animal shapes in the rocks in the background. A rat is on the right.
