The floodgates have literally opened

The NZ people take advantage of the features they have, we pass a Geo-Termal power station along the way but our destination is the Aratiatia Dam/Rapids. This is a hydro electric station that every day 3-4 times they open the dam gates and let the water out. This creates turbulent rapids down the Aratiatia river. We position ourselves at a lookout just a way down from the dam and wait for the show. The klaxon sounds a 5 and 2 minute warning then on the opening. We were slightly disappointed at first as the gates opened and water was coming out slowly. I think we were imagining a movie style thing where the water rushes down the river crashing around everything in its wake.
